Research & Development

We know how
We have the necessary know-how.
nkt cables’s laboratory researches in and develops environmentally sustainable plastic materials for cables and leads and also handles quality control of raw materials and finished goods. The HV laboratories perform electrical tests of the cables.
nkt cables’s technicians are internationally recognised for their specialised knowledge in compound development. nkt cables was the first company in the world to introduce lead-free PVC cables in which the poisonous lead stabilisers had been replaced by the relatively harmless calcium and zinc stabilisers. The idea was so good that the Danish Minister for Environment and Energy prohibited marketing cables with leaded PVC after December 1, 2001.
Research plays an important role in all parts of nkt cables. Recently, NKT Research, nkt cables’s sister company, carried out revolutionary research in materials technology, etc. This research enabled nkt cables to begin the production of fibre optical cables as early as in 1980 and to put the world’s first superconducting HV cable into service in 2001.
In 1995, nkt cables took the international lead as far as the environment is concerned by developing a special environmentally-friendly PVC- and halogen-free compound. As a logical consequence hereof, nkt cables has manufactured almost only PVC- and halogen-free cables since 2001.
We call our PVC- and halogen-free cable programme NOPOVIC. The name originates from the describing name “no polyvinylchloride”, and today all our cable names of this type begin with “NO”.
